UK 2016 Grower Field Day
By Team SmartBarley / August 5, 2016
Farmers and agricultural leaders from across the UK gathered at Throws Farm in Essex on July 14th for a “Day in the Field”. The day included guest speakers and a showcase of Budweiser barley, as well as a chance to see how it is grown. Our own chief barley doctor - Director of Global Barley Research Gary Hanning - was there to visit with growers and share insights from our research trials.
Global Director of Agricultural Development John Rogers was among those who spoke to the group about the latest⚊and what’s to come⚊from SmartBarley. Jason Warner, the Business Unit President for North Europe, was also there to discuss the UK Budweiser market and the importance of having a local barley program.
Today, 90 UK farms participate in the local Barley for Budweiser program - in conjunction with SmartBarley - which kicked off in December 2014 with just 23 farms. The farms commit to growing malting barley which seek to meet the specific quality needs for Budweiser with some guidance and support from our local ag partners.
The UK growers seem enthusiastic about growing for our iconic brand. Grower Mike Gemmill, who owns W Gemmill and Son farm in Writtle, Chelmsford said, “We are really proud to be a part of the Budweiser family. The event was great fun and we are very much looking forward to continuing our work with AB InBev and farmers worldwide.”
